EA Armed Forces Sports Week

Armed Forces

A Section of Uganda Officers at the culture and sports week for East africa

The Ugandan Contingent comprising of 09 officers and 91 other ranks arrived on May 2, 2006 and was welcomed by the Defence Attache, Col Ben Rwehururu on behalf of the High
Commissioner Brig (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza. Competitions were in the following disciplines:

  • Football
  • Netball
  • Cross Country
  • Boxing
  • Handball

Medals/Trophies were won in the
following manner:-

  • Gold in Boxing
  • Silver in the Cross Country
  • Bronze in the Handball

Officials

MSD Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa MP and Lt Gen Ivan Koreta graced the opening of the games in the presence of the Minister of State for Defence Kenya, Hon. Njenga Karume MP, and Col Phenehans Katirima MP. The Chief of Personnel (CPA) of UPDF was the Chief of the Mission for UPDF and Brig Hussein Ada was the Contingent Commander.

Gen Aronda Nyakairima MP was present at the closing Ceremony and attended the Farewell party. A Banquet was hosted by the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of Kenya at Safari Park Hotel where he exchanged gifts with his counterparts of Kenya and Tanzania. On 10th May 2006 the Contingent left for home accompanied by the Military Police to Busia and it arrived home safely.

The Contingent exhibited high standard of discipline and cooperation with their counterparts from Kenya and Tanzania.

The first Culture and Sports week had been hosted by Uganda in the year 2005. The hosting of the 2nd and 3rd Culture and Sports week will be held in Dar next year. The CDF of Tanzania said that he is eagerly awaiting his counterparts and the Contingent in Dar for the 2007 participation in the same disciplines and even more.
