Uganda Celebrates 42 years of Independence

President Thabo Mbeki and First Lady Zanele Mbeki at the Celebrations

National Celebrations to mark 42 years of Uganda’s independence were held on October 9, 2004 at Kololo in Kampala. In his address to the Nation, President Yoweri Museveni pointed out
that the 1995 Constitution which is being reviewed, gave the country a solid background on all constitutional issues. He assured Ugandans that consensus would be reached on all the contentious issues. President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa was the Chief guest. He called upon African countries to work for development, peace and poverty reduction, and thanked Uganda for hosting the African National Congress (ANC) during their struggle against apartheid. Also in attendance was Vice President Abubakar Atiku of Nigeria.
