UNEP also convened the first Global Women’s Assembly on Environment dubbed “Women as the Voice for the Environment (WAVE). The objective of the Conference was to discuss the role of women in environment management and sustainable development.

Professor Wangari Maathai’s contribution to the environment and her winning of the Noble Peace Prize was the main highlight at the Conference. The 64-year-old environmentalist beat 194 other nominees to win the prize, that includes 1.3 million dollars, and received the award in Oslo on Dec. 10, 2004.

The Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Dr Anna Tibaijuka and the Uganda Minister of State for Water, Honourable Maria Mutagamba, facilitated the round table discussion on Women’s Rights, Environment, Poverty and Health assisted by Amb. Agnes Kalibbala, the Deputy High
