UN-Habitat Governing Council

The 19th Session of the Governing Council of UN-Habitat was held in Nairobi May 5-9, 2003. It was attended by about 800 delegates from 187 member States along with local authorities, parliamentarians, non-governmental organizations as well as private sector representatives from around the world.

The meeting focused on how to solve the problems of rapid urbanisation among other issues.

Kenya’s Vice President, H.E. Kijana Wamalwa opened the meeting with a call for urban development plans and shelter policies favouring the poor. Uganda’s delegation was led by Hon. Francis Babu, Minister of State for Housing, who reiterated the government’s commitment to the implementation of the Habitat Agenda.

The Governing Council commended the Executive Director, Mrs.Anna Tibaijuka, for ably steering the restructuring process to make UN-Habitat more effective and efficient.

The meeting approved the proposed budget of US$44 million for the 2004-2005 biennium.
