EAC Ministers Approve Budget

The Council of Ministers of the East African Community approved a budget of $8.4million for the new financial year.

The EAC secretariat was allocated $5.2 million, the East African Legislative Assembly $2.2 million, the East African Court of Justice $638,000, and the Defence Liaison Unit, $327,000. The budget will be presented to the East African Legislative Assembly for debate and approval.

The Council of Ministers made appointments of Mr. James Kuleyi (Tanzania) to the post of customs/trade officer and Mr. Henry Jabbo Obbo (Uganda) to the post of administrative aide to the Secretary General in the EAC Secretariat. Mrs. Gloria Nakebu (Uganda) was appointed to the post of Editor of Hansard, East African Legislative Assembly.

In a related development, the World Bank and the European Union pledged US$500 million and Euro375 million respectively in support of an East African Roads Network Project. This commitment was made during an East African Community Ministerial and Donors meeting chaired by President Mkapa of Tanzania, Arusha, April 26-30.
