President at Horticultural Conference

President Yoweri Museveni officiated at a two-day international horticultural conference, May 6-8, 2003 at Speke Resort, Munyonyo.

The Presidential Conference on Horticultural investment and Marketing was attended by about 25 international buyers and experts. Papers on the latest developments in fruits, vegetables, vanilla and flower production to local and foreign growers were presented.

Stakeholders in the horticultural sector hailed the President’s initiative and involvement in the conference as proof of his recognition of its vital contribution to Uganda’s foreign exchange earnings.

Steven Humphrey, the Horticultural Advisor with Uganda’s Investment in Developing Export Agriculture Project (IDEA), said President Museveni and the World Bank initiated the conference. IDEA, which is funded by USAID, has for several years been providing financial and technical assistance to Uganda’s expanding horticultural sector.
