Fish Earns $87.5M
Uganda earned $87.5m from exports of 25,159.66 tonnes in 2002,
according to the Commissioner for fisheries, Dr. Dick Nyeko. This
makes fish the leading non-traditional export item.
The growth of the fisheries Sector has been boosted by precautionary
approach to bad fishing practice, reduced immaturefishing and improved
quality control. The sector has managed to sustain the foreign market
without any ban imposed in the last two years.
However, Uganda must increase fish farming activity to sustain
growth. Uganda can sustain the demand by embarking on commercial
aquaculture. This needs massive financing from the Government and
the Private sector.
In addition, processors should be encouraged to invest in commercial
fish farming as a way of ensuring sustainable supplies of raw materials
to their factories rather than depending on fluctuating wild stocks.
