Hon. Rugunda Chairs UNEP Governing Council

Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, President UNEP Governing Council.

Uganda’s Minister for Water, Lands and Environment, Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda was elected President of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council (GC), during the 22nd Regular Session of the Global Environment Ministers Conference at Gigiri, Nairobi February 3-7, 2003. The GC is the highest policy making organ of UNEP that convenes every two years to deliberate on global environmental
concerns.

Hon. Rugunda is also the current President of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). He pointed out that UNEP would mainly focus on the implementation of the outcomes of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), biodiversity and benefit sharing, trade and the environmemt, the role of civil society, and international environment governance. He observed that Africa’s Presidency of
AMCEN and UNEP GC will ensure that the priorities of Africa are brought to the global agenda.
