Textile Projects in Jinja Commissioned

President Yoweri Museveni com-missioned new spinning and upgraded garment projects of Southern Range Nyanza Limited, which is located in Njeru town in Mukono District, on February 12, 2003. The Company was formerly known as Nytil Jinja.

The two projects’ investment valued at US$2.65 million dollars is aimed at enhancing the company’s capacity to produce better quality and quantity of fabrics and garments that
are necessary for the competitive export market under the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) arrangement. President Museveni commended the management of Southern Range Nyanza and the private sector for promoting national growth and development. President Museveni advised the Company to liaise with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to identify areas where government can intervene to support
some of the company’s strategic sectors for improved production capacity. He pointed out that some government departments and schools should satisfy their requirements by
purchasing products of the company. He urged workers of the company to be disciplined and avoid unlawful industrial action.

The Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry Professor Edward Rugumayo observed that the company’s adding value to its finished products has greatly supplemented government call for a modernized and industrialized national economy.

The Managing Director, Mr. VirenThakker, pointed out that the company is bent on a serious modernisation program so that it can spin more cotton and create market for cotton growers, produce quality yarn, fabrics and garments for better value. He also said that the program will go a long way in creating more employment opportunities for Ugandans.

Mr. Thakker disclosed that the company will begin shipping its initial AGOA order before the end of February 2003.

Earlier, President Museveni was conducted on a guided tour of the factory by the Chairman of Picfare Industries Mr. Kishor Jobnuputra. He visited the spinning and garment departments, security printing, design, bed sheet and battle wear sections. Also present was the Minister of State for Finance (Investment) Hon. Sam Kutesa.
