Uganda Attracts US$ 896 Investments in 2002
The Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) licensed 161 projects worth
US$896.million in 2002. The mining and quarrying sector led with
six projects worth US$545.8m, representing 60 percent of total investments.
Agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors registered 28 projects
worth US$82m. Three sectors of transport, communications, and storage
registered 16 projects worth US$41.3m. The tourism sector got 12
investors with a total value of US$38.4m, while the Energy sector
got six investors who established projects worth US$36m.
According to a UIA Report, investments in the social services
sector was worth US$21.5m. One project for financial services worth
US$20m was also licensed. UIA licensed
two projects worth US$9.8m in the trade sector, and four projects
in construction worth
US$4m. Professional servi ces at-tracted investment worthUS$1.6m.
These investment projects are expected to create 15,085 jobs.
Britain was the leading source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)
amounting to US$560m in 2002. Uganda also attracted investments
from Mauritius, Kenya, Iran, Aus-tralia, the Netherlands, South
Africa, India, Tanzania, the United States and China. Ugandans invested
in projects worth $133m.
