Uganda Ex-Combatants to be Repatriated

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in conjuction with the Amnesty Commission and Uganda High Commission, Nairobi are in the process of effecting the repatriation of Ugandan Ex-combatants currently living in Kenya. This repatriation is being
conducted under the Amnesty Act of 2000 that provides for extension of blanket amnesty to all Ugandans who have engaged in dissident activities against government since 1986.

Registration and verification of applicants was carried out at IOM offices in Nairobi, from January 20, 2003 to February 10, 2003. According to the Chairman of the Amnesty Commission, Justice P.Onega, a total of 359 individuals will be repatriated beginning
early March, 2003.

The repatriation and reintegration exercise is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the government of Uganda, and other donors.
