FAO Summit in Rome

President Museveni attended the World Food Summit in Rome, Italy in May 2002, and addressed the three day Summit opened by Italian President Carlo Azeglo Ciampi. President Museveni observed that blocking Africa’s value added products bythe developed world partners kills Africa’sopportunity to earn more foreign currency, enhance employment opportunies and pur-chasing power. In addition, it hinders the expansion of Africa’s tax base.

While in Italy, the President visited and held talks with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican. The talks focused on bilateral and international issues.

He also had an interview with Radio Vatican during which he observed that the Constitution of Uganda guarantees the freedom of worship and as such, the government does not interfere in religious matters. He also pointed out the investment opportunies in Uganda, and briefly discussed the Polical Parties and other Organisations Bill passed by Parliament recently.
