Hon Wapakabulo Visits China

The Third Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs visited the Peoples’ Republic of China, April 3-10,2002. During the visit he held discussions with the Prime Minister, H.E. Zhu Rongji, Deputy Prime Minister, H.E. Qian Qichen, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Tang Jianxuan, and the Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, H.E.Shi Guangsheng.

He also met the Secretary of the Com-munist Party, the Mayor of Beijing, and African Ambassadors accredited to China.

The Mayor of Shenzen informed him that the business community in the city was ready to invest in other countries. He invited the Mayor who agreed to lead a delegation of investors to Uganda at a date to be agreed.

The Chinese Minister of Foreign Af-fairs announced an additional grant of 20 million Chinese Yuan (approx US$2.5m) towards the construction of the headquarters of the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The government of China had earlier extended a
grant of 30 million Yuan (approx. US $3.8m) towards this project. Hon. Wapakabulo signed the agreement for the additional grant with the Minister for External Trade and Economic
Cooperation. While in Beijing, he also opened a coffee shop under a joint venture between Uganda Coffee Development Authority and China

North Star Investiment Group aimed at promoting consumption of Uganda coffee in China.
The Chinese Prime Minister extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of Uganda to visit China at a mutually agreeable date.

Hon. Wapakabulo stopped in Hong Kong to open Uganda’s HonoraryConsulate.
