Uganda Appoints Consul in Mombasa

Mr. Evans Asiimwe has been appointed Ugandas Honorary
Consul, resident in Mombasa. He took up his duties after presenting
his Letters of Commission to the Kenyan Minister of Foreign
Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Marsden Madoka
on June 20, 2002. He was accompanied by the High Commisssioner,
H.E. Francis K. Butagira. This is the first time that Uganda
has appointed a Honorary Consul in Kenya.
During the ceremony, Hon. Madoka noted with satisfaction
the cordial relations existing between the two countries and
expressed hope

that Mr. Asiimwes presence in Mombasa will strengthen further
the good relations. He added that Mr. Asiimwes presence atthe
Port would assist in solving some problems Ugandans experience at
the Port, although most of them had been addressed by the Kenyan
authorities.
Mr. Asiimwe expressed gratitude to the Kenyan Government for allowing
him to perform duties on behalf of his country. He also thanked
the Government of Uganda for entrusting him with the responsibility
of a Honorary Consul in Mombasa which is Ugandas gatewayto
the sea.
The Honorary Consul pledged to work closely with the High Commission
in Nairobi to ensure more effective representation of Ugandas
interests.
He will assist in promotion of tourism and trade beween Uganda
and Kenya, attraction of investment, and coordination with Kenya
Ports Authority. In addition, he will offer consular services to
Ugandans working and resident in Mombasa.
A reception in honour of Mr. Asiimwe was held at the Hilton Hotel
Nairobi where members of the Diplomatic Corps, and some members
of the Ugandan Community in Nairobi and Mombasa were introduced
to the new Honorary Consul.
