L-R: Mr Evans Asiimwe presenting his Letters of Commission to Hon. Marsden Madoka, June 20, 2002.

Mr. Evans Asiimwe has been appointed Uganda’s Honorary Consul, resident in Mombasa. He took up his duties after presenting his Letters of Commission to the Kenyan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Marsden Madoka on June 20, 2002. He was accompanied by the High Commisssioner, H.E. Francis K. Butagira. This is the first time that Uganda has appointed a Honorary Consul in Kenya.

During the ceremony, Hon. Madoka noted with satisfaction the cordial relations existing between the two countries and expressed hope

that Mr. Asiimwe’s presence in Mombasa will strengthen further the good relations. He added that Mr. Asiimwe’s presence atthe Port would assist in solving some problems Ugandans experience at the Port, although most of them had been addressed by the Kenyan authorities.

Mr. Asiimwe expressed gratitude to the Kenyan Government for allowing him to perform duties on behalf of his country. He also thanked the Government of Uganda for entrusting him with the responsibility of a Honorary Consul in Mombasa which is Uganda’s gatewayto the sea.

The Honorary Consul pledged to work closely with the High Commission in Nairobi to ensure more effective representation of Uganda’s interests.

He will assist in promotion of tourism and trade beween Uganda and Kenya, attraction of investment, and coordination with Kenya Ports Authority. In addition, he will offer consular services to Ugandans working and resident in Mombasa.

A reception in honour of Mr. Asiimwe was held at the Hilton Hotel Nairobi where members of the Diplomatic Corps, and some members of the Ugandan Community in Nairobi and Mombasa were introduced to the new Honorary Consul.
