Great Lakes Symposium in Kampala
The government of Uganda in conjunction with the Mwalimu Nyerere
Foundation organised the Great Lakes Symposium in Kampala, April
8-11, 2002. The climax of the symposium was the Summit of Regional
Heads of State on April 11, 2002 hosted by President
Museveni and attended by Presidents Daniel arap Moi of Kenya, Benjamin
Mkapa of Tanzania and Pierre Buyoya of Burundi. Ethiopia, Eritrea
and Rwanda were represented by High Level Delegations.
The Conference acted as a catalyst for the emergence of a regional
movement towards sustainable peace, unity and development. In addition,
it provided a forum for dialogue, planning and action for participatory
democracy and development in the Great Lakes region.
Uganda also commemorated the anniversary of the fall of Idi Amin
(April 11, 1979). President Museveni paid glowing tribute to the
late President Mwalimu Nyerere, the government and people of the
United Republic of Tanzania for their assistance in ousting the
dictator.
